019-Ghent project at
Cave-Ayumi Gallery, Yarai-chō, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.
Cave-Ayumi Gallery, Ramp, ori.studio & 019 present: 5 BENCHES BY 019
With 5 Benches the Belgian collective 019 revisits and reshapes some of the projects it developed over the past years. The newly designed benches recuperate materials and ideas from the group shows Reservoir and Radiator, from a landscape intervention in the park surrounding a castle, from a scenography for a design show, and from a bouncy castle based on a scaled down version of the former welding factory 019 operates from in Ghent. As benches, the collective’s history gets presented as a constellation of fragments, and its practice – oscillating between design, architecture and art, and between functionality, disruption and aesthetics – turned into sturdy furniture.
The exhibitions coincide with the launch of a publication bearing the same title, conceived, designed and published by ori.studio. The book brings together documentation, source materials and reflections on the projects that shaped the benches, and will be presented during both exhibition periods.
